Perimenopause & hair

Nobody warned you about the hair.

Hot flashes, sleep, mood — those were on the list. The part that widened in a photo somebody else took was not. This page is the warning nobody gave you, and the routine we built because of it.

What actually happens

Estrogen helps keep a follicle in its growing phase. As it declines through perimenopause — usually somewhere between 45 and 55, often earlier — that phase gets shorter. More follicles sit in rest at the same time, and the strands that grow back are finer and shorter than the ones they replaced. Nothing falls out in handfuls. Density simply drops, and density reads first at the part, the crown and the ponytail.

That is why the shampoo did nothing, the biotin did nothing, and the rosemary oil did nothing. None of them were aimed at the cause. And it is why your doctor was right that the labs were fine, and your stylist was right that it is common at this age. Both true. Neither one is a plan.

The hair did not change because you did something wrong. It changed because your hormones did.

The three tells

The photograph. The mirror is kind; a photo from slightly above, in bad light, is not. The ponytail. Three turns of the elastic where two used to do. The drain. Not more than before, necessarily — just noticed now, because you are looking.

If two of those are you, and you are somewhere in the change, you are the person this routine was written for. If your shedding is patchy, sudden, or arrived with fatigue, feeling cold, or changes to your skin and nails — that points to something else, and something else needs a doctor first.

The routine

Two serums, applied to the scalp, not the hair. The Density Serum every morning: one dropper at the part, thirty seconds of massage, nothing to rinse. Clear and water-based, so there is nothing on fine hair by lunchtime. The Shed Serum at night, only while shedding is active, then stop. Two minutes a day, safe on grey and colour-treated hair.

It supports scalp comfort, hydration and the appearance of density. It is a cosmetic. It is not a drug, it does not treat or prevent hair loss, and anyone who tells you a serum regrows hair is selling you something.

Why ninety days, and why one payment

A scalp routine takes about three months to judge fairly. Month one is comfort and the brush. Month two is where nothing seems to happen and where most people quit. Month three is where you compare the photographs. Selling you thirty days at a time makes you re-decide twice before you can fairly judge it, so the protocol is the default: both serums, three months, one payment of $237, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel. That is $79 a month against $98 bought month by month.

What to do on day one

Before the first dropper, take the photograph: part your hair, phone slightly above, bathroom light, no flash. Save it. Take the same photo every two weeks in the same light. On day ninety, put the first and the last side by side. Better? Keep going. Not? Email us one line and we refund the whole order — empty bottles and all, nothing to ship back.

And if you buy nothing: take the photograph anyway. Knowing is better than wondering.

The honest edges

What this is, and what it is not.

Boon Labs is a cosmetic product. It supports the appearance of density and scalp comfort. It does not treat, cure or prevent hair loss. If you are pregnant, nursing, being treated for a scalp condition or on a prescribed hair treatment, ask your doctor before adding anything to the same scalp.

90Days
